Gambit Film Loses Its Director

Things are not looking good for the Gambit film. Reports are just coming in that the director tied to the project, Rupert Wyatt, has just walked away from the film. According to Deadline, Wyatt decided to move on from the film when the delayed production clashed with his plans for another project. Wyatt later released this statement:

“I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Channing and the team at Fox, but regrettably a push in the start date now conflicts with another project. I thank them for the opportunity, and I know that Gambit will make a terrific film.”

Sounds civil enough, but rumors are swirling that the departure also had to do with a disagreement over the script and budget. This is fallowing the news from earlier this year when the film’s star Channing Tatum reportedly walked away from the film, and then later decided to return. Probably not a good sign when both your lead and your director are trying to jump ship.

Maybe this is a sign from the Marvel gods that this project should go on hiatus. Even in the comics Gambit has yet to prove he’s a worthy lead. He’s a great addition to the team, but on his own he’s always lacking substance. When a solo Gambit comic series can’t sell, how is the movie suppose to fair any better. It makes sense that FOX wants to build up their own hero universe with Deadpool joining the universe next year. But that doesn’t mean we need every mutant to get the film treatment.

For now, Gambit is still set for release October 7, 2016.
