In a surprising announcement, Marvel has announced an addition to their universe–sort of. While the character of Thor is familiar to both comic book readers and film fans, it doesn’t take long to notice a striking difference in the new Thor. Introduced on ABC’s The View, Marvel’s new Thor is shown as a fierce blonde female, rocking the classic magic hammer Mjolnir. The View’s Whoopi Golberg did the honors in making the announcement
It’s a huge day in the Marvel Universe. Thor, the God of Thunder, he messed up, and he’s no longer worthy to hold that damn hammer of his. For the first time in history, that hammer is being held by a woman. That’s right. Thor is a woman!” stated Goldberg.
The debut of this female Thor will occur in a brand new Thor series, which likely spells the end of the Thor: God of Thunder series by writer Jason Aaron and artist Esad Ribic. Still, even with changes on the horizon for the God of Thunder, Aaron wanted to remain clear in the new direction of the character and what it means in the broader Marvel world.
This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before,” Aaron said in a press release.
Questions now linger about the current (old?) Thor and what is to become of him now that he has been deemed “unworthy.”
